Midsommar

Thomas H, Manhattan, Jul 7th 2019

Midsommar, the new film of Ari Aster (director of last year’s hit horror film ‘Hereditary’) arrives in theaters this weekend. The premise is simple: With their relationship in trouble, a young American couple travel to a fabled Swedish midsummer festival where a seemingly pastoral paradise transforms into a sinister, dread-soaked nightmare as the locals reveal their terrifying agenda. The director, Aster, is clever and the movie references such great films as Kubrick’s The Shining and Lars von Trier’s Anti-Christ, but this film falls short in that it lacks the psychological depth that is necessary for it to work.
